LUCKY FONZ III

1

Lucky Fonz recently toured South Africa playing around the country including a slot at this year’s Sexy.Crooked.Teeth Oppikoppi music festival. He has been a regular visitor to South Africa for the past three years and his following has been growing each year which is really great to see as he is an amazing performer.  We shot a few promo photos just before he played a gig at Cool Runnings in Victory Park, in shooting these photos I wanted to capture the fact that despite his jovial and at time comedic persona on stage his lyrics are often more serious than one would think at first listen. I am already waiting for his next tour…  Check out his Myspace page.

DEAD ALPHABET

I’ve been a bit lazy, okay a lot lazy and therefore have not been paying attention to my blog, so here goes…  a few weeks ago I shot a few photographs with the guys from Dead Alphabet, they are an awesome bunch of guys and one of the best bands around.  If you’re looking for some good old fashioned rock and roll then Dead Alphabet is definitely worth checking out. We were supposed to shoot at Top Star drive-in as well but I had some difficulties getting the generator working so we just ended up shooting at Justin’s place.  There only idea I had was ‘negative space’(whatever that means).  These are the photos…

UNSEEN HERO

1

A few weeks back I was contacted by Justin from Unseen Hero to shoot some live shots for their next gig at Tanz Cafe which I will maybe post a bit later. We decided to shoot some promo shots before the gig. I’m not going to say much about these photos  but what I will say is that if you get a chance you should check these guys out, they’re a relatively young band but with some insane talent and I think they’ll go far.

STICKY TAPE PORTRAITS

1

I’ve been meaning to post these for a while now, its part of the shoot that I did with Sticky Tape a few weeks back. I wanted to get some sort of ‘mood’ in the photos, not sure if I accomplised that but I realy like them, the room we were shooting in had white walls all around so I ditched the umbrella and used a gridded snoot to modify the light…

STICKY TAPE PROMO

Last week I took some photos of Sticky Tape, it was a pretty horrid shoot to begin with, I forgot one my shoot-thru umbrellas, my flash radio transmitters we on the blink and I only had one working receiver, I also forgot my light stands… anyway, it got better. So this is one of the shots I quite like, a bit of desaturation, some selective dodging and burning, and a curve adjustment basically. If you like acoustic rock check them out at www.stickytapemusic.com. Will post a few more from that evening in a bit.

ALAN SHENTON

I’ve been a fan of Zebra & Giraffe since I first heard their single The Knife, a fan of Alan Shenton from the time I first saw him playing guitar in Harris Tweed(now Dear Reader). Not too much to say here  besides that I think he is an awesome guitarist. I went to Edenvale on Sunday to shoot some photos with Alan(www.alanshenton.co.za), my plan was to get a lot of ambient light in the shot with a city-ish background and thus get a good balance of flash vs. ambient. I am quite happy with the results despite having some issues with my lens  focusing  correctly(note to self, next time  buy Nikon).

Here are some shots from Sunday, let me know if you like…

I contacted Gary Thomas(previously of Cabins in the Forest) about doing some promo shots a few months back. He was in Jo’burg this week playing a few shows so we finally managed to get some shots done. It was a lot of fun, I’m just going to post this one shot for the time being as Gary hasn’t seen any of the shots as yet. You can check out some of Gary’s music at www.myspace.com/garythomas
